THE EPIGRAM DEFINED

Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines an epigram as "a terse, sage or witty and often paradoxical saying." The word entered the English language in the 15th century and derives ultimately from the Greek epi + graphein, meaning to write on, inscribe.
